1880's Securité Suspender Clips - French or Belgian Origin

These ornate brass suspender (brace) clips bear the Prince of Wales’ feathers crest with the German motto “Ich Dien” (“I Serve”) and the French word “Securité” (“Security”). Likely of French or Belgian manufacture, they were marketed for use on railway, police, or uniform suspenders during the late 19th to early 20th century. Recovered from an 1880s railroad line camp, these matched clips reflect the international trade in uniform fittings and personal gear that accompanied the expansion of North American railroads.

I attempted to track down Joe Miller's descendants to give them the badge as a keepsake. Unfortunately I was not successful. I did find his original obituary and an associated reference in a historical book. That information has been provided in additional images.
